Geophysics Proves Mine of Information

Redevelopment of a former housing site at Fryston Colliery in South Yorkshire has been significantly aided by the Met Surveys geophysics team.

The site required the identification and mapping of buried features before redevelopment could commence: of particular importance was the accurate location of cellars belonging to houses that had previously been demolished.

Leeds based Met Surveys implemented a phased approach to the geophysical investigation. A full reconnaissance of the site was conducted using the electromagnetic (EM) induction technique. Areas of interest, identified by the reconnaissance survey, were then targeted for further investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR).

The geophysical investigation successfully located the cellars and identified that they had not been fully remediated. The targeted GPR survey refined the information obtained from the reconnaissance survey, providing information on the depth and extent of the cellars.

The geophysics provided by Met Surveys proved highly influential to the scheme, said Brian Holden of Building Design Partnership. It confirmed unknown site conditions that have minimised the risk to the contract.
